In maritime navigation, poor visibility is an "invisible killer" threatening ship safety. When weather conditions such as dense fog, heavy rain, or sand and dust occur, the visibility distance shortens sharply. Ships not only struggle to observe nearby landmarks, with positioning accuracy dropping significantly and being prone to deviating from the planned route into dangerous areas, but also face obstructed lookout operations—lookout personnel cannot intuitively judge the situation of surrounding ships, and radar performance is also weakened by interference. Crew members on duty in low visibility are prone to high tension, slow thinking, and a sudden drop in adaptability, increasing the risk of accidents. Against this backdrop, the FT-BN20 Portable Visibility Detector has become essential equipment for ships to cope with poor visibility. It adopts the forward scattering method to measure the total atmospheric extinction coefficient and calculate visibility.
The BN20 features an integrated portable design with a lightweight body, perfectly adapting to the limited space on ships. It can be flexibly deployed in locations such as the bridge and mast, requiring no complex installation and being ready for use immediately after startup. Based on the optical detection principle, it captures visibility distance data in real time with meter-level precision. Equipped with a 10.1-inch high-brightness touch screen, it intuitively displays real-time data and historical curves, providing accurate values for crew members and making up for the subjectivity and limitations of manual observation. Addressing key navigation pain points, it provides data support for determining the "safe speed": crew members can adjust the ship's speed based on the on-screen data and the ship's performance, avoiding the risk of collision or grounding.
The instrument has a built-in 8G SD card for real-time data storage and supports query and export functions. It is equipped with a large-capacity lithium battery to adapt to outdoor emergency scenarios, and its 24V low-power supply meets the needs of long-term use. Data can be linked with the navigation system, and when visibility drops to the threshold, the instrument automatically issues a reminder, helping to predict environmental changes and reducing the crew's judgment pressure and decision-making errors. The shell is made of high-quality aluminum, offering excellent waterproof, dustproof, and anti-collision performance. It has a built-in watchdog circuit and its interfaces include lightning protection design, which greatly reduces damage from lightning strikes and static electricity, ensuring stable outdoor operation. It is suitable for various types of vessels, from large cargo ships to small fishing boats.
